Podcast Excerpts with SRAM’s Danie Lategan:

“When speaking with Gee about gear ratios, he wanted something he could do anything with. Good for climbing. Good for descents…. He opted for the 46/33 chainring with a 10-33 cassette. We paired it with 303 NSW Disc-brake wheels set up tubeless with the Zipp Tangente RT28 tires. That adds to the comfort of the bike and the versatility of the bike as well.

“Where Gee is from and riding most, and also from my own experience living in the UK for a long time, roads aren’t great. You want as much comfort as you possibly can have with fairly wide tires. Running them tubeless is a big plus. You can run them a lower pressure. Rolling resistance is better than running it with tubes. You have just a much more comfortable bike. This is Gee’s Dream Bike, but that is exactly how I would have built it up if I had this frame to use.”

“The best advice I can give in terms of getting the best bike for you is, make sure it fits. Make sure that the size is correct and the geometry suits your type of riding. Bear in mind where you’re going to use the bike. Most of today’s road bikes, they’re so capable. We’re taking road bikes where five or 10 years ago we never thought of taking them. For me, building a Dream Bike would be something I can use anywhere and everywhere as a road bike.”

“The Zipp 303 NSW Disc-brake Tubeless wheels, for me that’s the best all-around wheel in the Zipp lineup…. It’s a super versatile wheel. It’s still aerodynamic. Obviously if you go to a deeper wheel in a straight line, it will definitely be a quicker wheel. If you have a lot of crosswinds, you might want something shallower. The 303 is the right balance between stability and speed. When riding it, it feels super smooth especially when set up tubeless… I would recommend you put wide tires on it. It just gives you a super smooth magic-carpet ride feel.”
