Luke McKenzie

Sport/discipline: Triathlon, Ironman and Half Ironman

About Luke: Luke began competitive sports at the very young age of 6 as a swimmer and represented his state of NSW as a Waterpolo player until he found his true passion for the sport of Triathlon, at age 13. Growing up watching the nearby Ironman® Australia in Forster Luke knew his destiny would to one day become an Ironman. In 1998, Luke was selected for his first Australian Junior Triathlon team and in 2001 won the Bronze medal at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 Luke was part of the Australia institute of Sport Triathlon program that traveled to Europe to compete on the ITU World Cup circuit.

Finding his strength in non-drafting traithlon events, Luke became a regular on the U.S. circuit in 2003 and in 2004 attempted his first Ironman-distance race in Busselton, Western Australia, placing 3rd. Luke has since gone on to compete at the Hawaii Ironman on five occasions and in 2008 won his first Ironman in a new course record time at Ironman Japan. In 2009 Luke successfully defended his Ironman Japan title and also won Ironman Malaysia, placed a close second at Ironman Louisville and finished 15th at Ironman World Championships in Hawaii resulting in one of the most successful seasons ever recorded by a male Ironman athlete. In 2010 Luke won one of the toughest Ironman races ever recorded with his victory at Ironman China in shoe-melting 40 C degree heat also claiming the course record. He was also the first non-South American to win Ironman Brazil in almost a decade claiming the Ironman Brazil title and running to his fastest Ironman finish yet in 8 hours 7 mins (a new course record).

The 2011 season saw Luke take on Europe’s best at Ironman Frankfurt where he placed sixth in very cold, rainy conditions and ended the year with a ninth placing at Hawaii Ironman World Championships after placing second off the bike and recording the sixth fastest ever time over the course.

SRAM® products used: SRAM RED road and TT groupsets.

Zipp® products used: Zipp 808 Firecrest®, Zipp Sub-9 Disc and Zipp Tangente™ Tires.

Favorite Zipp product and why: Zipp 808 Firecrest/ Zipp Sub-9 Disc combo. The Zipp Firecrest 808 (front) Super-9 disc (rear) combo on a flat fast course because I love the feel of the bike when you get those babies flying along the tarmac!

Do you train with a SRAM-Quarq® power meter? Yes, since 2009.

What is one surprising or helpful thing you learned about yourself from training and/or racing with power? I find the SRAM-Quarq power meter has helped me hit my training zones with better accuracy and, in turn, I’m finding my bike splits in races have been improving from year to year.
