Quick climb for Mørkøv

Michael Mørkøv of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank is off to a flying start in his first Tour de France. The former world track champ, riding a set of Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels, maneuvered himself into the six-man breakaway in Sunday’s Stage 1 winning three of the four mountain sprints to earn the prestigious climber’s jersey.

”It was a huge experience to be standing on the podium in the biggest race in the world and I'm immensely proud of that achievement. I knew I had to go from the start of the stage in order to follow through and it takes both luck and persistence. Along the stage, I felt in control of the sprints with the exception of the second climb where I made a mistake but on the final two climbs I didn't take any chances,” Mørkøv said.

Sylvain Chavanel of the Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Cycling Team also was on the offensive last weekend. The popular Frenchman followed up his stellar third place finish in the Prologue with a late attack on the Category 4 Côte de Seraing, a 2.4km, 4.7 percent average gradient climb to end Stage 1. Though he was reeled in, it was a brave bid for yellow. Chavanel remains in third place in the general classification, just 7 seconds back of Fabian Cancellara.
